Mauritius continues to advance its lead in digital connectivity amongst African countries, a strength that has transformed the island nation into a business processing and outsourcing hotspot. In recent years, the country has boosted its digital capacity and begun expanding into artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. Consequently, these initiatives have helped attractforeign investment in Mauritius.

The country is pursuing its leadership role in ICT on regional and global levels mainly through its Digital Mauritius 2030 strategic plan. This plan lays out ways to enhance the country’s competitiveness and digital growth through ICT infrastructure, talent management, innovation, digital management, and cybersecurity.

All-fibre connectivity

Fibre connectivity throughout Mauritius was completed in 2018. It cost more than MUR5 billion (about USD75 million). The completion of the fibre rollout was notably well ahead of its expected 2020 windup. As a result, Mauritius has bragging rights for bringing 100 percent fibre connection to homes.

The foundation for ICT careers has been strengthened through a Digital Youth Engagement Programme. In addition, an ICT awareness programme for senior citizens was initiated. This equips retirees with digital communication skills.

One-stop e-government services

Furthermore, the Mauritian government now provides one-stop access to online government services, such as motor vehicle registration. Mauritius won the E-Government Champion Status at the 2018 World Summit of Information Society as a result.

The ICT-BPO sector of Mauritius has grown in line with the country’s digital transformation. The entire Mauritian ICT-BPO sector accounted for 5.8 percent of the country’s 2019 GDP. The sector also brought employment to about 25,000 individuals.

What’s more, some 800 ICT-BPO enterprises have set up shop in the country. They include global players from the UK, US, Europe, and India. BPO companies in Mauritius include Accenture, Allianz, Ceridian, Convergys, Huawei, and Orange Business Services.

Mauritius is also home to various tech startups. The innovative, high-quality solutions offered to global clients increases foreign investment. Services include legal process outsourcing, digital services, e-commerce, applications development, and support desks.
