Horse riding in Mauritius

Count horse riding as one of the delights of living in Mauritius. Across the island, there are many stables from which to draw the steeds for joyful rides around various locales. Even horse-riding newbies can enjoy an equestrian experience as most local stables provide professional guides for them.

In the north of Mauritius, living in 2Futures’ Mont Choisy Le Parc opens easy access to newly revamped stables. These riding facilities at the Mont Choisy Estate are reputed for having a magnificent family of horses. Horse rides in the estate cover a scenic 9-kilometre golf and nature reserve promenade track.

For even a longer horse-riding experience, the residents at 2Futures’ Les Residences de Mont Choisy can steer onwards the Daruty Forest. This destination offers a circuit trail of about 20 kilometres also popular amongst off-track bikers and trail runners. From the forest, the trail extends to track sections in the villages of Grand Gaube, Calodyne, and Petit Raffray.

Great choice of horses

Les Calèches du Paradis at the Upper Vale village provides horses for rides in Daruty Forest. Its stables are less than 3 kilometres east of Les Residences de Mont Choisy. There are great picks from a team of horses here including the long-maned and mystical Irish Cob steeds.

Horse riding aficionados living in Mauritius can also tap the facilities of the Forbach Stables. Located in Rivière du Rempart just 15 minutes’ drive from Grand Baie, it also offers horse-riding lessons.

Forbach Stables organises horse rides on trails across sugarcane plantations and on the island’s beaches. It also holds an array of equestrian competitions throughout the year. Its horses include well-cared racehorses retired from competition at Mauritius’ popular hippodrome.

Novice-friendly rides at a private preserve

Shifting to the island’s east, horse riding is one of the recreational activities at Le Domaine de l’Etoile. At 1,200 hectares, it claims to be the biggest natural and private reserve in Mauritius. This preserve is located between the villages of Montagne Blanche and Kewal Nagar (formerly Belle Rive) in the Flacq District.

Horse riders pass on trails amidst the preserve’s natural environment teeming with a wide variety of trees and orchids. Le Domaine also features a large river, streams, and waterfalls. Besides horse riding, the preserve’s other facilities include a zip line, quad bikes, and fat-tired mountain bikes.

Living in Mauritius indeed offers many life and leisure possibilities, and horse riding is surely just one of the island’s exciting activities.
