Mauritius promises a more potent hunting ground for skilled and talented young expats seeking overseas career opportunities in 2021. The country has adopted new policies making it more attractive for qualified foreign professionals to consider moving to Mauritius. These new measures were adopted not only to address the country’s manpower skills gap. They were also taken as a solution for the country’s declining and ageing population.
The new guidelines have included food processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing to the low minimum salary requirement of MUR30,000 for foreigners’ Occupation Permit. This permit threshold on minimum monthly salary formerly applies only to expats working in ICT and business process outsourcing. Foreign professionals in other sectors are eligible for an Occupation Permit for jobs with a minimum of MUR60,000 monthly salary.
Foreign students completing their tertiary education in certain courses at Mauritian schools can also jumpstart their careers on the island. These foreign graduates of local schools are eligible to apply for a Young Professionals Occupation Permit. This 3-year permit covers foreign graduates of courses in Information Technology, Financial Services, Fintech, Robotics, Biotechnology, and Artificial Intelligence.
Foreign professionals holding an Occupation Permit may invest in any local business too. The investment is allowed if the permit holder isn’t employed in the business and doesn’t manage it. Also, the permit holder cannot derive salary or employment benefits from it. However, this can be allowed if the permit holder is just a minority shareholder in the business.
Foreign investors in Mauritius can now get an Occupation Permit at a lower investment threshold of USD50,000. This was a reduction from the prior USD100,000 minimum requirement. The required minimum annual turnover of the business investment was also reduced to MUR4 million.
An Occupation Permit notably now grants foreign investors residency in Mauritius up to 10 years, an increase from the 3 years previously. The Permanent Residence Permit available to investors has likewise been extended from 10 to 20 years.
The government grants a Permanent Residence Permit to foreigners investing in immovable property worth from USD375,000. Significantly, foreigners granted residency permits via property acquisition can already work in Mauritius without applying for an Occupation Permit.
Foreign investors can choose from apartments and penthouses built under the government’s Property Development Scheme like those at Ki Resort. This project offers a selection of properties for sale at the price range qualifying for a residence permit.
