Foreign retirees living in Mauritius on a more permanent basis is also now feasible in two ways. Firstly, the government extended from 3 to 10 years the validity of its residence permit for non-citizen retirees, effective September 2020. This permit is open to foreigners at least 50 years old and making a monthly sustenance transfer of USD1,500 for the duration of the permit.
A second option is a permanent residency via a home purchase in any of the country’s schemes open to foreign buyers. The government grants a permanent residence permit to foreigners buying a home worth at least USD375,000. Significantly, the validity of this permit has been extended to 20 years from 10 years previously.
The foreign retirees’ Mauritius residence permit extends to their spouse or partner and children under 24 years of age. Together, they can all benefit from the advantages that living in Mauritius has to offer. These include access to many exciting life and leisure centres as well as state-of-the-art healthcare facilities. Retirees can also invest in fruitful economic activities on the island, provided they don’t hold an executive position in those enterprises.
