The warm tropical climate of Mauritius largely influenced the architecture of its residences. The country’s rich history is likewise a factor in the concept behind many of the beautiful houses.
This amalgam of environmental and historical influence manifests in the French colonial houses on the island. These vintage homes served as the residence of the island’s sugar barons during the 18th and 19th century. Mostly, scenic hillsides and beautiful gardens form as the setting for these houses.
The trademark of these colonial houses manifests in their symmetrical structures and wrap-around porches. Given their historical significance, the National Heritage Fund worked to preserve these houses. Some of these houses now serve as museums and gourmet restaurants that have grown popular amongst locals and tourists alike.
Visit the Eureka House for this unique feast for the senses. This residence is located near the river in Moka. Notably, this residence belongs to the family of Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, the Franco-Mauritian writer-professor honoured with the 2008 Nobel Prize in Literature.
The Eureka House is reputed not only as one of the most beautiful houses built in the French colonial style. It’s also amongst the largest houses on the island, featuring 109 doors and windows.
The Eureka House was converted into a museum cum restaurant in 1986. It flaunts furnishings from the East India Company, and its outbuildings serve as guesthouses.
La Demeure Saint Antoine is another classic example of the French colonial architecture in Mauritius. This ancestral house of a Mauritian family was built in 1830, and its ownership hasn’t changed hands since them.
La Demeure Saint Antoine now serves as a guesthouse with a popular restaurant. It is located in Goodlands at the Grand Gaube village in the north of Mauritius.
Notably, 2Futures has also chosen this village as the site for its Ocean Grand Gaube with an architecture deftly adapted to a tropical setting. This 2Futures development departs though from the colonial style and instead flaunts an elegant modern architectural style.
Ocean Grand Gaube’s tropical modern style incorporates quality materials designed to beautifully age over time. The interiors present clever floor plans to optimise the space and provide the ultimate comfort and conviviality.
Striking spaces and generous glazing allow for an abundance of sunlight and soothing ventilation within the residence. These features make everyday home living delightful throughout the seasons while minimising your carbon footprint.
The exteriors sport stunning wood and stone cladding finished to perfection. These elements blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings and manicured gardens. The residences have been so oriented so that their balconies capture views of the nearby ocean and natural pond.
