Driving on the road

Ask locals on the most rewarding joy ride for them in Mauritius, and it’s likely they’d pick a coastal route northward. The reasoning for their pick is sound. This track traverses scenic coastal roads and side streets that more than flaunts Mauritius 5-star resorts. This route also offers astonishing points of interest that reveal the charming character of the island-nation.

Consider the itinerary below for a road trip that unveils all the best Mauritius has to offer.

Flag off from Balaclava

The historic village of Balaclava is an apt starting point for a road tour of the north of Mauritius. The Dutch established here the first major settlement in the island during the 16th century. And it was them who named the local waters Turtle Bay due to its conspicuous numbers of turtles. English voyagers used the bay later as an anchorage during the 17th century. This while they replenish their supplies and have ship repairs.

The French subsequently took over in the 18th century and set up an arsenal to support their war campaigns. Much later in contemporary times, the Mauritian government declared several historic ruins in Balaclava as national monuments. Turtle Bay also holds the distinction of being the first protected Marine Park of Mauritius.

Trou aux Biches

Proceed northward from Balaclava for some 8 kilometres on Royal Road, and pause for a brief stop at Trou aux Biches. Formerly a fishing village, Trou aux Biches has grown as one of the centres for Mauritius 5-star resorts. The first major hotel on the island was notably built in this village in 1971.

Pointe aux Canonniers

Less than 10 minutes from Trou aux Biches, driving north on Royal Road takes you to Mont Choisy Beach and onwards to Pointe aux Canonniers. This area exudes more than a beach resort town’s ambience. The corporate buzz of the island has likewise established its presence at Point aux Canonniers mainly through the newly developed Mont Choisy Business Quarters of 2Futures.

Grand Baie

The cosmopolitan vibe in an oceanfront setting levels up further in just around 10 minutes driving on from Pointe aux Canonniers to Grand Baie. As a reminder of the rich cultural mix in Mauritius, the St. Anges Gardiens Catholic church in Grand Baie shares a common street in Grand Baie with a Muslim mosque.

You’ll also find in this village an exciting mix of speciality restaurants with sushi, Chinese dishes and Portuguese cuisine amongst the choices. Picks for shoppers are as varied at Grand Baie’s Sunset Boulevard Shopping Village.

Onwards Grand Baie, Royal Road unlocks even more oceanfront villages so enchanting that majority of them hosts Mauritius 5-star resorts.  You can hop to Pereybere, Bain Beouf, Cap Malheureux, Calodyne, and Grand Gaube. All are emblematic too of the island lifestyle that moulded the north of Mauritius as a highly recommended homebuying destination.
