Study in Mauritius

The tertiary schools in Mauritius are popular among those who visualise moving from foreign student to expats. Young South Africans like the idea of studying abroad. Many international students choose Mauritian schools, because they can work in the country after graduation.

There are many potential employment areas for foreign students with the right career choice graduating in Mauritian schools. They can land a job in information and communication technology, healthcare, business and finance, and tourism. Notably, international students in Mauritius can work for a maximum 20 hours per week.

Growing regional hub for higher learning

Significantly, Mauritius has taken the initiative to establish itself as a regional hub for quality higher education. In early 2020, the Mauritian government replaced the Tertiary Education Commission with the Higher Education Commission and the Quality Assurance Authority. Government hopes to triple numbers of those wanting to move from foreign student to an island resident.

They can choose from 50 private and 15 public institutions offering more than 700 tertiary programmes in the colleges and universities of Mauritius. Their options range from certificate to postgraduate and doctoral levels in various fields. These include IT, accounting, banking, finance, administration, medicine, management, fashion and design, travel, tourism, hospitality, hotel management, engineering, law, and psychology.

Imagine moving from foreign student to expat life

Many of these courses could be taken in Mauritian branches of top-rated international schools such as London’s Middlesex University. It has a campus in Flic en Flac. Established in 2009 as the first British university in Mauritius, the local branch offers a broad range of courses including postgraduate studies. Middlesex University Mauritius also provides onsite student accommodation on the west coast. The location is just minutes from the beach which is typically the centre of education in Mauritius.

For a homegrown choice, the state-owned University of Mauritius (UoM) in Moka comes out tops with its international-standard programmes and track record since 1966. Its history dates back to 1914 when it started as a school of agriculture.

The Faculties of Engineering, Law and Management, Science and Social Studies and Humanities were added next. Then came the Centre of Information Technology and Systems, the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies, and the Centre for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning.

The Mauritian culture presents a remarkable montage of European, African, Chinese, and Indian influences. Overall, this rare cultural mix could be reason enough for graduating foreign students to continue enjoying living on the island.
